Last night we got the swimming pool ready for the ducks. Since the pool is quite high compared to the ducks themselves, Hubs and I built a wooden ramp, and had the pool next to the concrete steps of the barn.
It took them about 5 minutes of looking at the water and listening, as I splashed around with my fingers making water noise, before they figured out how to get in. After that it was “play time” and we actually had to force them into the barn for the night because they didn’t want to leave to pool!
They had a ball, as did we watching them. Talk about cheap entertainment!

I don't remember if you said, but will you eat these ducks? Or will they lay eggs and you'll eat those? Or are these ultimately just fun pets? All possible answers are great with me; I'm just curious!
Hi Elizabeth~ They are pets I hope to get eggs out of…. I've never had duck eggs, as our mallards have always flown away before I got the chance so I have my fingers crossed that I end up with a few females.
Awww!!!! They are getting so big.
I’ve heard duck eggs are great for baking. I’ve never eaten one fried or scrambled. I’ve also heard they are very “gamey” and strong. My mom says they make great cornbread and cakes. They look like they’re having a blast. I hope they hang around.
Cathy~ I've never had duck eggs either. I know my Aunt can not eat them as they are too strong so I'm not sure how I'll like them, but if I can use them in baking they will be appreciated.
Loved this video. How entertaining!!!! You might need to get a bigger pool next year. I have a Mallard pair that nest next to my creek in the spring, and I love to watch them. He guards while she eats. They peck at the seed that the birds drop from the feeder. Love them..Then one day, they are gone.
