A Murder of Crows

On my way out to Arizona I stopped at my normal place. Did my normal routine. Except I finally talked a murder of crows into having lunch with me.

I had to sweet talk them into it with groceries, but they finally gave in.

One thing I love about New Mexico is the crow population. They are my bird. I just love them, and this week I had some left over tortilla shells with me that I had planned on bringing home for the girls. I’m sorry to say though they are not getting the treats this time around.

They LOVED the tortilla shells! I ended up with 9 crows total. Some, like this one were very trusting. I made a deal with them before they got to eat that they were NOT to poop on Rosie. They complied.

They were absolutely starving. I almost pulled a bowl a bowl of water out for them so they had something to drink but then I thought better of it… I figured the other drivers probably thought I was crazy as it was. No need to prove them right!

There were two that filled their beaks until they couldn’t hold any more. I got a huge kick watching them, and it made sitting outside a nice treat.

This one had a bad wing and seemed to take back seat to everyone else. I was able to get within about a foot of it.

I give so much credit to the animal population. They live on so little, and we as humans live on such excess. It was nice to watch them and get a perspective.

Bethany About Bethany

I am a prisoner of the highway, farmer and lover of Mother Nature, the moon and stars, my long and low, flat-top Peterbilt, chickens, cats, dogs, horses, cooking, photography, tattoos, tea pots and vintage barnifacts…among other things. I’m also a very, happily married, third-generation truck driver. My career choice is both demanding and rewarding, just like most things in life that are truly good.

Great photos, Bethany. There’s something about crows. They are very smart birds. You may have already heard of this book, Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness. It’s on my reading list–hopefully for sometime soon. When I am around crows it almost feels like there is a human inside of the bird trying to tell me something.

    Travel safe!

  2. We love crows also. My mom is always feeding them. She has a big bay window and we watch them constantly. There were 12 crows but now there’s only 9. One day she put out over ripe bananas. That was pretty funny to watch. They are super smart. I totally agree with you. The animals have so little yet eek out an existence on this planet. There’s a lesson there somewhere.
