Photography Tools of ‘My’ Trade

I get a lot of questions about what kind of camera I use. I am always so glad to hear that people like my photos, but I promise it is not because of my camera or even more importantly ME—I think for the most part it is the lens I’m using, lighting and the scenery around me. Nothing is more important than lighting, lots of natural lighting as I rarely, if ever use flash. Some basic Photoshop skills are good too.

I use an entry level Canon T1i for almost everything I shoot and I use numerous lenses (Telephoto, Macro, Wide Angle) depending on the time of day/what I’m shooting. My Telephoto lens has an image stabilizer, but that is the only lens that has this feature and it is my least used (and most expensive lens) that I use.

I started out with a Canon Powershot point & shoot early on, and if you go way back to the beginning of One Girl Trucking or my Flickr page you can find those photos, and see that my style or the quality really hasn’t changed much.

Generally when I moved up to a DSLR I wanted options of different lenses, remote shutter, and quickness (focus time is nil compared to a point and shoot).

I take lots of photos and usually when I post a photo here on OGT or on Facebook you see the good one that I chose out of the 25 to 100 (or more) photos that I took of that one subject.

As for the video, I get lucky. Generally I use my T1i, but I do not use any kind of camera mount per se, as velcro does the trick. I have an older Pete with a longer wheelbase and a good suspension. That is all.

B & H Photo is the first place I will send you online. Of coarse there are a ton of other places locally that I use because of the fact that I can go in, talk to them and tell them what I want to take photos of and they will not only point me in the right direction, but also they are willing to let me try it out in the store to make sure it is in fact what I’m looking for.

Hope this helps!
