No, I am not talking about Christmas. I am so thankful it is over… I know, I sound like a scrooge but I just can’t stomach the Un-thoughtfulness of the season, if you will. We of coarse do our own quiet celebrating, but it involves laughter, good food, music and family. No gifts are purchased. (We did not spend a dime)
What I am talking about though, is that it is time to start thinking about your GARDEN! I can’t seem to help myself, although I have held off quiet long this year! The seed catalogs started showing up in the mailbox right after Thanksgiving and I have had all I can do to not wax poetic about seeds on an hourly basis, dreaming of the smell of warm tomatoes and the smell of dirt and everything else that goes with just ‘being’ in my garden on a daily basis! Focus Beth!
Last night after much, much, much deliberation I placed my order to Seed Savers. I may have gotten a bit carried away, and I will now have to horn in on Hubs area where he plants his corn & watermelon but oh well, I say share & share alike since his Peas take up one of my garden spots every year!
I try to stick with organic, but that is not always possible. I also keep with heirloom varieties and I only order from places in which I trust and believe are doing something to keep life simple and focus on what is really important which is good, healthy food that has sustained generations before us.
When ordering I look for items that are good for storage, I am going to try a different squash this year (Potimarron) because of this. Most of what I order is ordered just because they will be eaten all winter long which cuts down on my grocery bill and makes us even more self sufficient in the big scheme of things. The items I order need to be good for canning, freezing or drying and speaking of drying I am trying a new bean this year as well (Brockton Horticulture) so I am quiet excited!
I thought I would include my order for you to peruse. It may give you some ideas if you’re interested in gardening. I’m still missing a few things, especially peas & onions but I will be working on that soon!
Happy gardening!

It seems an understatement to say that my dad gardens. Last February, a dozen people descended on his house in upstate New York every day for a week. He fed us all every evening out of his garden. In February. A dozen of us. Daily, for a week. We all were in awe of his ability. I’m going to send him a link to this post so he can try some old new varieties. Thank you!
I love this catalog and my dad and I both have ordered our garden out of it. Have you ever visited their farm? I don’t think its too far from you (if you don’t mind a little road trip) . Happy gardening! This year I am not going to have a garden because we will hopefully be moving, but I bet if we are still in this place in May I will be putting in tomatoes and beans and such, just from starter plants, unfortunately.
