Growing Up

I see life here on the farm at a week at a time, but those are always staggered by a week in Rosie, that takes me away from the action. The growing. The change.

Just a few weeks ago they were babies. But then, after one week gone my babies look like mini full grown hens.

I am in love with them all, but the Buff Orpingtons I just want to hug and squeeze since they are so fluffy and squeezy looking.

Henrietta is another favorite of mine. I just love her colors, and I do believe the name fits her perfectly.

She’s a good little hunter, and can be seen running through the grass after butterflies and she has even caught a mouse. Who knew?

Marilyn has these tail feathers… they are funny tail feathers, not really like much like a chickens. They really are more like feathers that someone threw like darts at her hind end, and that’s where they landed. It’s okay though, we love her just the same. Oh, and by the way, she is now called road runner.

Marilyn surprisingly is still keeping the white around her face.

And finally, the ducks are HUGE already. I will be putting together a video together later today for you. I am most positive I have one hen and one drake. We have been working with them since day one and they will eat out of our hands for pretty much any goodie we throw their way. They absolutely adore oatmeal! Tippy 2, the hen honks and quacks most of the time which they say the females will do verses the male who is more gravely in his speak. Tippy is a bit smaller than the male too, who has yet to be named. Any ideas?

And finally, all I can think of when I see these cute little fluffy butts is this…

Guess what? Chicken butt!

Bethany About Bethany

I am a prisoner of the highway, farmer and lover of Mother Nature, the moon and stars, my long and low, flat-top Peterbilt, chickens, cats, dogs, horses, cooking, photography, tattoos, tea pots and vintage barnifacts…among other things. I’m also a very, happily married, third-generation truck driver. My career choice is both demanding and rewarding, just like most things in life that are truly good.

  1. You might think I’m crazy, but I’m thinking either Daffy or Sylvester if that picture of the duck with black and white plummage is him. I don’t normally think of cartoons for naming animals, but the colour of your photos is so crisp, it reminds me of Looney Tunes! Fitting somehow since I’m a Canuck, with the nutty Loonie and Tooney names for our one and two-dollar coins.
    Loving your blog.
It’s heartening to see the real life of a long-haul driver instead of just the stereotypes or the headlines.
I found a lot to respect on those nights when I was travelling the 401HWY east of where I live.
Someone I knew used to have their transport-trainer friend teach their children to drive.
The best thing I could imagine to really understand how long it takes a transport to stop and the kinds of weight we’re up against when we make a stupid mistake in our little cars.
Thanks for your posts about life realities on and off the road.
My sister used to drive truck … it gives me some good vibes.

  2. i enjoy reading about all of ya’lls adventures but especially like reading about the animals. Great site that I read a while back and then forgot you. Will soon have my own web site which is in the making.
