A Truck Drivers View #2

For my second driver interview I would like to introduce Paul Tarin or Slimeface as many of you may know him on Flickr and Twitter. I met Paul through Flickr a few years back, and I have to say that before I ever knew a thing about this guy his soulful, eye-catching pictures of the road drew me in. I wanted to know him. I wanted to know how he did what he did with a camera! He took pictures of what I have felt and seen over the years as I’ve drove all over the United States and never could put into words or into a

A Feather in my Cap

Just thought I'd share this with you... Although I always strive for a clean driving record and a positive attitude out on the road, it's not something I think about daily, for the most part it's just there. It's what I do. So, I was thrilled to stop in to talk to dispatch the other day and get this along with a safe driving award from Great West Insurance. The AttaGirl (well I think I'm the only female here) award goes out to one contractor and one company driver a year and I'm very proud to have received it this

Good Friends…

One of the benefits of trucking I feel, is meeting new people that have the same love for trucking that I do. Unfortunately, the industry has changed a lot in the last few years and more than not, most people keep to themselves and don't converse like they use to. Years back you would talk to people for information, knowledge, and companionship because another trucker was all that you had out here, miles from home. Sadly, I feel the new breed of truckers coming into the industry are missing out on what I have known, and

More Winter Blues…

I'm en-route to Los Angeles, but stuck in South Dakota because of white out conditions. Accuweather had a post up today saying that this winter could possibly be the worst in 25 years. At this point I believe it, and I'm not feeling all that lucky I'm stuck in it. I'm down on the south west corner of South Dakota on HWY 18 and 73. Red means roads are closed. And there is a lot of red... Since I've last posted I have... Slid from up again this dock... To here... Just past this snowbank, in front of Rosie, is a good

A Truck Drivers view…

As I mentioned before, I am going to start having drivers share their views on trucking. I'm proud to introduce Michael as my first driver here on One Girl Trucking. I hope you enjoy him and his views on trucking as much as I have! How many years have you been trucking? I'm starting my 35th year behind the wheel. I started driving truck at 16, 2 days after I got my drivers license. I drove a 20-foot straight truck for 3 years before getting my Class One (now Class A) at 20. I have been driving Tractor/trailer since

Don’t Drive Drunk! Unless….

Your on HWY 10 in Minnesota. At night.... So last night I ended up going to Wadena MN first before going out to Merrill WI which is fine, more miles, more money. I left Wadena around 8:15 p.m. and had a 6 hour trip ahead of me. I figured I'd be sitting in WI around 2:30 am. I wasn't thrilled with the weather since the air was heavy and it was raining now and then. It never helps me truck that way, as I always love it when it's nice and clear with a ton of stars in the sky. Last night I would have rather been tucked in

Just Shoot Me!

I am on my return from California right now. And I'm sick. This is one major downfall of trucking. It started on my way out here, but I wasn't too worried. I figured I'd kick it but no luck. I had a perfect day yesterday as far as trucking goes, because I was unloaded an hour and a half earlier than my appointment and loaded with 20 pallets of tomatoes to bring back to St Paul before noon local time. I think between the two people loading my wagon they whipped them 'maters on in around 15 minutes. Yep, I could have been

Follow the Moon

For most of my career trucking I have run at night. My favorite reason being, nights like the other night when the moon led the way. My trucking company is aptly named Quarter Moon Express because of nights like this. I am so lucky to see mother nature at her best and worst. I'm in it knee deep day in and day out and there is always something new to see.   A few things that I have experienced over the years.... Miles and miles of beautiful red Poppies in California Salmon flecked with sun, skimming the lazy waters

The Essence of She

When I started trucking I had a few goals in mind. One of the first (I promised my dad this) was that I was always going to look like a lady, although there are many, many days that I sure don't sound like one (I can swear like a trucker, no doubt!). The second was that I was going to be as good as my grandfather, and the third was that I would some day be an owner operator. I have got them all for the most part. But there is always room for improvement! I grew up in a trucking family and ever since I was little I

Gypsy Spirit

I have gotten a lot of guff from my husband who drives local (and always has) about how I can pack up my truck and "just leave". He has always brought up the fact that I act as if I have no feelings for what I am leaving behind at home and that has always bothered me. Truckers have to go. That's what it's all about and if you sit around and think about what is at home your missing, you'll never leave or if you do, you will be worthless the whole time your gone which is no fun when you have 1500 miles ahead and behind
