Driving Safe & Staying Safe

hoodshot+shinywagon

Anymore it seems there are more poor drivers on the road than good. I see it everyday, as I'm sure a lot of you do too. More and more I am calling the cops, in hopes that they can stop some of these drivers and either let them know that their poor driving is being noticed by other drivers or get them off the road if they pose a threat to the rest of the public. Last week hubs was headed to St Cloud via highway 23. He was on a two lane portion of the highway, doing the speed limit of 30 miles an hour through a small

The Easy Way Out

A few weeks ago when I was waiting to check in at a produce shed, a younger driver asked me two questions while standing there. The first was where he could get a permit to go into New Mexico. The second was, where are the weigh stations at? I told him most of the bigger truck stops should be able to help him with permits, and if he looked in the front of his map book, he could find all the contact information he should need on any state for permitting and/or weigh stations.... He looked at me confused and told me he

Eye Opener

First off, I want to thank every one of you for all the kind, thoughtful comments you have made in the last few days on my Alive and Unscathed post. You people are wonderful! I posted "alive and unscathed" for a number of reasons. First, to get it off my chest, I knew if I kept driving it would do me no good or anyone around me. There are times you just don't belong behind the wheel and I knew I needed to be off the road. Secondly, I posted this to show readers what truck drivers deal with more than not... Usually

Alive and Unscathed

This may ramble. At this point I'm so shook up I don't know if I should shit or go blind, but I want to write this while it's fresh in my mind, and right now I don't belong behind the wheel. 20 minutes ago I was going north on HWY 83 in Kansas. I was all alone, no one in front of, or behind me. This part of Kansas is very desolate, with not much traffic, which is why I love it. It's a road I'm very familiar with, as I have traveled it for years now. I was heading north bound on HWY 83 just south of Oakley Kansas. The

CDL vs. Non CDL Holders

So,  I've been sitting here reading about the trucking industry, and what FMCSA has planned for truckers. I'm thinking, that before long if the government has it's way, trucking will be down to a few large companies and I, along with many, many, good people who LOVE trucking to the bone will be given one of two options: Go out of business or join the ranks with the other steering wheel holders and drive a governed piece of shit that is fitted with a satellite that tells god and everyone else our where abouts, how fast

Don’t Drive Drunk! Unless….

Your on HWY 10 in Minnesota. At night.... So last night I ended up going to Wadena MN first before going out to Merrill WI which is fine, more miles, more money. I left Wadena around 8:15 p.m. and had a 6 hour trip ahead of me. I figured I'd be sitting in WI around 2:30 am. I wasn't thrilled with the weather since the air was heavy and it was raining now and then. It never helps me truck that way, as I always love it when it's nice and clear with a ton of stars in the sky. Last night I would have rather been tucked in

Trucking. Should You Be?

So. One thing in the trucking industry that is really bothering me lately is all of this crap Swift, JB Hunt, Werner, C.R England, Prime, and Crete (I could go on and on with names here) are doing when hiring unqualified drivers who couldn't hold a job at Mc Donald's. There are a lot of people who DO NOT belong in a truck but our wonderful government is looking the other way because these big companies can throw their money and weight around. Did you know most companies have the authority to both train and license

That time of Year

Dry roads, 12 degrees above zero, and stars early Saturday morning gave me a false sense of hope as I run east on I80 hoping that my just being sick and wanting to crawl into my sleeper would be all I would have to fight with that day. Unfortunately as I was coming into Rock Springs WY I came upon a sign that said I80 was closed at Sinclair WY which didn't really bother me since I get off at Rawlins and head up into Casper. Of coarse I was wondering if there was an accident or bad weather on Elk Mountain... I kind of

What Gives?

I'm on vacation. You knew that right? It's a driving vacation which suites me well since I like to drive. This vacation is being driven in my grandmothers car and it's probably the most I've driven a four wheeled vehicle in many, many moons. Usually the furthest I go in a car is the 20 miles into town for groceries, and I am rarely ever on a 4 lane road  in a 4 wheeler because I live in the boonies and spend most of my time in my truck. So, here's the thing or my conclusion anyway. People are just shitty drivers. They
