There are times, I get asked why I don't have any flowers in my planter on the deck. To which I have to answer, the girls have to take their daily dirt baths... Even though there are umpteen acres around here to take dirt baths on. And they are so good at sharing! And getting our deck full of dirt once they shake the dirt off... It's finally happening! And not a minute too late! Well, actually it could have happened a month ago and I would have been fine with it. But I'm happy it's coming none the less! Meet Ugly Betty. She's not really ugly, but every year- sometimes twice a year she goes broody. And then she gets ugly. Not mean ugly. Actually I don't think she has a mean bone in her body. She does though, puff up like a turkey and shriek at us when she knows we are going to make her get off her nest and go outside. It's kinda a game. Trying to keep her out of the barn. I've put ice cubes and ice packs under her to try to cool her down. I've blocked the nest. I've even put buckets and bottles of fly spray in the nest

We lost a hen the night before last night. She was one of my Black Australorps which really makes me mad. I knew as soon as I opened up the coop yesterday morning... A pile of feathers was all I could see. I spent all afternoon working to make sure it wouldn't happen again.
