Just a Short Little Ditty About a Bird Her Beer

http://youtu.be/-dXJ6TXwMgQ   This is Henny Penny one of my oldest girls. While we were enjoying a beer she jumped up and helped herself to a few sips of Hubs drink. It didn't seem to go to her head, and we did not let her drive anywhere.

Chickens in the Planter

There are times, I get asked why I don't have any flowers in my planter on the deck. To which I have to answer, the girls have to take their daily dirt baths... Even though there are umpteen acres around here to take dirt baths on. And they are so good at sharing! And getting our deck full of dirt once they shake the dirt off... Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Spring on the Farm

It's spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.  And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain It smells divine around here these days! Our one lone apple tree is blossoming like crazy! I have been working my arse off on my garden. Hubs helped me make 9 more beds and they are all in place. I'm still working on filling each one, but we do have a couple grapes planted, new raspberries which were my

The First Day of Spring!

IMG_7880

What a glorious day! Even if I woke up to rain spattering on my window, it was rain, not snow. And the Robins were singing their song, which sweetened the deal even more for me! My girls have been out. Not all of them today, actually I think I'm going to have to lock them out of the barn for a few hours tomorrow (especially the lazy ducks) so they learn that they have a job again and need to work just a bit on this farm. This is Red. She is from the first group of girls I ever purchased many, many years ago-like 6 or

Can You Feel It?

first+eggs!

It's finally happening! And not a minute too late! Well, actually it could have happened a month ago and I would have been fine with it. But I'm happy it's coming none the less! What the heck am I talking abut you ask? My animals are telling me that spring is on the way! Yesterday when I got home it was a balmy 36 degrees out so I spent some time cleaning Rosie up (checking oil/coolant, greasing my 5th wheel, vacuuming her, washing windows, and such) the ducks came out for a bath, and even my hens who have an aversion

Farm Life Woes

betty

Meet Ugly Betty. She's not really ugly, but every year- sometimes twice a year she goes broody. And then she gets ugly. Not mean ugly. Actually I don't think she has a mean bone in her body. She does though, puff up like a turkey and shriek at us when she knows we are going to make her get off her nest and go outside. It's kinda a game. Trying to keep her out of the barn. I've put ice cubes and ice packs under her to try to cool her down. I've blocked the nest. I've even put buckets and bottles of fly spray in the nest

The Good, Bad, & Ugly of Spring…

We lost a hen the night before last night. She was one of my Black Australorps which really makes me mad. I knew as soon as I opened up the coop yesterday morning... A pile of  feathers was all I could see. I spent all afternoon working to make sure it wouldn't happen again. I found a feather trail from the coop, over a tall door, into a back room, then up into the hay loft. One of the slide doors on the west side of the barn had been chewed on for some time. I'm guessing the coon had been working on it for for a

Wicked Chicken

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOtBSQHxbNY I had to post this, as it's cheap entertainment when I get home. This hen is my worst for giving up eggs. When she gets ahold of you, she will not let go! This time she drew blood! I have threatened many a time she will become chicken soup, but she has yet to believe me!
