Distracted Driving

No Texting

A while back I took some “Hood Shots” and posted them up on OGT like I always do. I ended up getting a comment from a fellow whom questioned the fact that I take pictures while driving down the road.  I answered him, and I’m not sure if he was happy with my response or just decided he didn’t want to continue the conversation. Our conversation is below. Hi Otis! Otis says: August 1, 2011 at 8:33 pm • How do you take those pics while you’re driving? That doesn’t seem to be what you’d expect of

Trucking, Training & the Mentality of Others

A few weeks ago when I went to pick up my loaded trailer I run into a driver I have known for some time. He is a company driver for one of the accounts I haul for. He has always been fun to talk to, so of coarse when I walked into the guard shack we gave each other a bit of shit, told a story or two and caught up on where we have been. Finally as I was going to walk out the door to go get my trailer I asked him if he was going out or coming back in, to which he replied that he wouldn’t be driving for the next two

Common Courtesy

So last week as I was making my way down HWY 23 in Minnesota I came across a JR Schugel truck, or rather I run up on the JR Schugel truck very quickly, since it was running at very slow speeds. I was running right around 60 mph, which was the posted speed limit. It surely wasn't fast enough to be coming up on another truck & the four-wheelers that trailed behind it like I did. The truck was running between 45 & 50 mph for the most part, but every once in a while the brake lights would come on and it would slow

Knowing How To Truck

Hs345

I drive down the road watching life go by. That's what I do. It entertains me, saddens me, makes me laugh, teaches me, and sometimes even depresses me. After so many years in a truck you get to know how people drive. What they are doing while driving and sometimes what they are not doing while driving. I watch truck drivers especially, since it is what I do. I like to watch how drivers run their trucks down the road, stop at stop signs, fly through parking lots and towns, or slowly take their time, using caution for

Truck-Stop #2

Truck Stop #2 Flying J- Jerrell Texas This was a very nice truck stop I must say. The employees were very nice, the whole complex was new so of coarse nothing was run down. They had nice tile floors and showers and everything was clean. My only real complaints would be that the towels were old and thin, and the automatic faucet sucked. I'm all for saving water and resources. Really I am, but have you tried brushing your teeth with little spurts of water? I had to wave one hand in front of the faucet trying to get

The Easy Way Out

A few weeks ago when I was waiting to check in at a produce shed, a younger driver asked me two questions while standing there. The first was where he could get a permit to go into New Mexico. The second was, where are the weigh stations at? I told him most of the bigger truck stops should be able to help him with permits, and if he looked in the front of his map book, he could find all the contact information he should need on any state for permitting and/or weigh stations.... He looked at me confused and told me he

First off, I want to thank every one of you for all the kind, thoughtful comments you have made in the last few days on my Alive and Unscathed post. You people are wonderful! I posted "alive and unscathed" for a number of reasons. First, to get it off my chest, I knew if I kept driving it would do me no good or anyone around me. There are times you just don't belong behind the wheel and I knew I needed to be off the road. Secondly, I posted this to show readers what truck drivers deal with more than not... Usually

CDL vs. Non CDL Holders

So,  I've been sitting here reading about the trucking industry, and what FMCSA has planned for truckers. I'm thinking, that before long if the government has it's way, trucking will be down to a few large companies and I, along with many, many, good people who LOVE trucking to the bone will be given one of two options: Go out of business or join the ranks with the other steering wheel holders and drive a governed piece of shit that is fitted with a satellite that tells god and everyone else our where abouts, how fast

Buck Up Women!

Maybe I just don't put up with much shit. Maybe I'm stronger than most. Maybe I just have to do things my way. Maybe my mother and father taught me that life wasn't handed to you on a silver platter, and trust me I asked for that a lot. So I started to watch this youtube video and about 2 minutes into it I wanted to poke my eyes out... In short, (just incase you can't stand watching either) this women made this video about driving with a male co-driver whom she couldn't stand. He stopped too many times, which woke her
