Spring on the Farm

It's spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.  And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain It smells divine around here these days! Our one lone apple tree is blossoming like crazy! I have been working my arse off on my garden. Hubs helped me make 9 more beds and they are all in place. I'm still working on filling each one, but we do have a couple grapes planted, new raspberries which were my

Can You Feel It?

first+eggs!

It's finally happening! And not a minute too late! Well, actually it could have happened a month ago and I would have been fine with it. But I'm happy it's coming none the less! What the heck am I talking abut you ask? My animals are telling me that spring is on the way! Yesterday when I got home it was a balmy 36 degrees out so I spent some time cleaning Rosie up (checking oil/coolant, greasing my 5th wheel, vacuuming her, washing windows, and such) the ducks came out for a bath, and even my hens who have an aversion

Duck Update

IMG_6902

On a more positive happy note that has absolutely nothing to do with trucks: I thought I had better give an update on the ducks. I'm always out with them hauling buckets of water so they can take baths & with that comes pictures but I've been having a heck of a time getting the pictures UP here! Everyone is doing well, but I do believe we all have a serious case spring fever. Where's the Water? As soon as we get close to the barn you can hear a barrage of quacking. When you open the door you have to step aside so

Winter Duck Bath

dk5

This morning I let the ducks out to get a bit of fresh air. It was 17 degrees out and I knew they would like to stretch their wings a bit. They kept waiting around, looking for something so I drug out my two water pans to see it water was what they wanted. Of coarse it didn't take them a second to figure out what I was going after. They followed me up to the hydrant and back to where we let them bathe in the winter. They were happy as they could be, even though to me it didn't look one bit fun!

More Loss on the Farm

We have another problem in our barn. This week we have lost another 3 birds. Two mallard hens and my last speckled hen. We spent yesterday morning before I left out again, digging a grave in our grove for them. The Baby We know it is a small animal like a mink or weasel since it got into the locked chicken coop at night. The bastard only eats their heads too. So damn wasteful. I wouldn't feel half as bad if I knew this animal was starving and ate them because they were hungry. This I think is about the kill. Disco Duck

I’m a Lucky Duck!

As I said the other day, I would have gotten more done in the garden without the help of my animals. Lucky for me though, they love us and I don't have a choice as to if I'm alone or not. I think of how boring our lives would be without the companionship of our animals and how lucky we are to be graced by them... Our animals make us laugh, smile, and cry and without them, I for one would be lost. Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms” ~George Eliot

The Boys~ Name that Duck

theboys1 copy

A little background on our Khaki Campbell's: I was SO hoping for females, I was so hoping I would have a good supply of eggs, but I'm quite sure they are both male. Reason being, apparently their hormones have kicked in. Every morning and afternoon seems to be a ride-a-thon with Flicka and Marilyn. The girls run, but as normal the boys don't give up too easily and finally the girls give up-- or in... I'm not sure which. I don't know much about ducks, but I'm betting next spring we will be naming babies... Swedish-

Rosie’s Pit Crew- Pre-trip Inspection

IMG_9766

While getting ready to head out this week I found our herd of ducks doing my Pre-trip Inspection for me! Really, I think they were more enamored with the "shiny" objects, but it sure looked like they were checking Rosie over before I headed out! Safety first!
