Babies First Outing

out1

We've had a little excitement here on the farm. One of our hens that is just a year old herself, decided to go broody on us a few weeks ago. There were a few times that I tried to break her of being broody, I even went as far as setting her in a snow bank to cool her down and to hopefully get her to change her mind but, she was dead set on being a mamma so finally I gave her her wish. I first started by making a nest in our big dog kennel and putting her and

Dirty Ducks

IMG_1417 copy

The weather has been a little weird around here for April. Last Monday I headed off to Houston Texas, and as I kissed Hubs goodbye I told him that hopefully we'd be working our gardens when I got home. And then on Thursday of last week we had over a foot of snow, (that I was thankfully not home for.) Then over the weekend we had even more snow/sleet/freezing rain to contend with. Living on a farm means all of that moisture does nothing but create muddy conditions and hold up anything to do with

Spring Fever

Rufus, Duck, Drake

The snow, ice, and cold are getting to me us. And sitting in Arizona with bright sunshine and green grass popping up in the ditches isn't helping any! I keep sitting here thinking that when I get home I'm going to go out and start digging and planting! And then I slowly come back to reality, the reality that there is 3 feet of snow coving my gardens right now... ugh! And I'm betting with this last storm that has rocked the nation, a good share of you feel the same way! We've all been stuck inside for way too

Dolly the Duck

Dolly the duck

We've had ducks over the years. And, of course we've loved every single one of them. They become family and we enjoy all of their different personalities and quirks. All of our other ducks though, could never hold a candle to Dolly.   Dolly is a dolly. She has a kind soul and the way she looks at me makes me think she knows she was saved by us. She follows us all over the property bringing Rufus and the rest of the clan with her. She is nosy- she has to mouth everything that she comes in contact with. She

Taking in the Simple Things

The Girls

Can you believe it's November already? I am SO not ready for what is to come... I've been doing a lot of walking as of late, looking at our property, taking in the smells of fall, the crunching of leaves under foot, and enjoying simple outdoor pleasures while I have my chance. Yesterday was a beautiful day. Sadly I spent most of it running around town getting groceries, going to an eye appointment, picking up Rosie after having her water pump replaced and new steer tires put on, then finally dropping off my wagon

Dolly & Rufus

Dolly the Duck

No that is not lipstick on my duck! Dolly absolutely LOVES tomatoes, and if you watch the video below you can even hear her slurping up tomato juice. We've come to the conclusion that Dolly is VERY happy to have us as her family and is pretty pleased with where she is, verses the mud lot she was in before. Dolly lays one egg a day, she hasn't missed one since she started laying, which I absolutely love-- although I'd be happy if she took a break too. She is very interested in us, and usually will bring Rufus and

The Chicken Coop

Chicken Coop

I have been meaning to post on this subject FOREVER, but as usual, life gets busy, and I forget. Since we were out cleaning the coop on Sunday, I finally thought to grab some pictures, so I could show off where the girls and boy live while it was fresh. Our coop is within our big barn, and there are two rooms for the girls to move around in and get away from each other especially in the winter when they could not care less to go out of doors. Notice we have a bench in the large area since this is one of both

A Sad Story With A Happy Ending

Black Swedish, Tippy, Rufus

The other day I mentioned that there was a bit of sadness here on the farm. I didn't really want to get into detail until I was sure and that we had rectified the situation. Rufus & Tippy A week ago last Friday I had been home all day in-between the house and garden. I spent a good share of my day canning, going in and out to hang clothes on the line and enjoying the sunshine. Since we have spoiled animals as soon as you go out the door, our whole group of ducks and chickens all come charging towards you

Eating Simply

Eating Simply; it does not mean eating poorly by any means. I have written about this subject before, but I thought I would write once again since I actually took a picture of what our eating habits look like around the farm. This whole order from Country Life Natural Foods, which I split with my Mother cost us $146.00.
Out of that $146.00 order, there were 50 pounds of brown rice, 10 pounds flour, a six-pack of rice milk, 5 pounds each of kidney beans, French green lentils, small red beans (mmm, think red bean's

The Farm- Summer Thus Far

Corn

Does anyone else hear the crickets around here? Hello? I apologize. I've been busy and Verizon wireless has been really, really making life difficult, since the only time as of late I've had time to sit and look at my 'puter has been when I'm on the road and my little wireless do-hicky has NOT been working properly. So last night I finally broke down and called them to complain. I told them my wireless device was going to be placed under my drive tire and if they did not fix it right now, I was driving over it,
