A Small Part of My World

Peterbilt Sleeper, My World, Bunk

So I thought I would share a small part of my world. I've been waiting on 10 pallets of grapes to come over the Mexican border for 23 hours now and still. I. am. waiting. This is the unglamorous part of trucking ha ha ha... It's hot out and since I don't feel like sweating, and mostly since I don't look too glamourous sweating I have taken to the bunk and air conditioning for the duration of the afternoon. This morning I did get up and out of the truck. I went for a walk, then made a good, hot, homemade

How Nice is Too Nice?

Bitch!

I have always prided myself on being polite. I run into a lot of women who are just plain bitches and I have first off never understood it, but more importantly never wanted to be like them. Even when I am in a piss poor mood, if the person I'm dealing with does not deserve it, I can reel myself in plenty to be polite and get along. However. Last week as I was loading oranges on a dock in Bakersfield California I had this thing happen and I have been trying to work through how I wanted to write about it because I

What is Your Favorite Tool?

Tools, Side Cutters

I have Rosie PACKED with tools. I have my grandfathers hammer (which would come in second on my list of favorite tools I use), a couple different sized socket sets, wrenches, screw drivers and too many other items to mention. I have a favorite that I keep very close by though, and I probably use them every day. That would be my side cutters or diagonal cutters. They are a tough little tool that is an all around help when my fingers are not strong enough. I use them for pulling foreign items out of tires

Remembering Our Veterans

Veterans Day

A friend of mine posted this story this morning on his Facebook page. While reading the story I had tears rolling down my cheeks and I immediately thought that the rest of you who read OGT would appreciate the story as well. This is the type of trucker I want you to know is out on the road, traveling down the highways with you. Thank you Jimmy! Story by Jimmy Guiste As I walked into the Iron Skillet Restaurant, my stomach was growling, and all I wanted to do was eat, now! The restaurant was

Distracted Driving

No Texting

A while back I took some “Hood Shots” and posted them up on OGT like I always do. I ended up getting a comment from a fellow whom questioned the fact that I take pictures while driving down the road.  I answered him, and I’m not sure if he was happy with my response or just decided he didn’t want to continue the conversation. Our conversation is below. Hi Otis! Otis says: August 1, 2011 at 8:33 pm • How do you take those pics while you’re driving? That doesn’t seem to be what you’d expect of

Eating & Living in a Truck

I promised a LONG time ago that I would do a post on eating in a truck and I am finally getting to it. Sorry for the delay! I really try to eat healthy while on the road, but more than that I want easy and tasty to go with it-sometimes even more so than healthy. I have a two rules that I live by in my truck, so I limit myself more than some, but I think I make do quite well. I never want to get out of my truck smelling like food of any kind & I don't want a mess in Rosie, so these are the rules! I will not

Trucking, Training & the Mentality of Others

A few weeks ago when I went to pick up my loaded trailer I run into a driver I have known for some time. He is a company driver for one of the accounts I haul for. He has always been fun to talk to, so of coarse when I walked into the guard shack we gave each other a bit of shit, told a story or two and caught up on where we have been. Finally as I was going to walk out the door to go get my trailer I asked him if he was going out or coming back in, to which he replied that he wouldn’t be driving for the next two

Why Would I have such a Nightmare?

This morning I feel as if I didn’t rest at all. I’m guessing it was because of the nightmare I had. I don’t have typical dreams it seems. Seeing as I have lived in a truck for so many years my dreams/nightmares tend to revolve around trucks & trucking. When I have nightmares, I don’t have the normal falling to the ground nightmares where you wake just before you hit the ground, rather I have nightmares of Rosie and me tipping over on some mountainside, to which I always wake just before she hits the ground,

Common Courtesy

So last week as I was making my way down HWY 23 in Minnesota I came across a JR Schugel truck, or rather I run up on the JR Schugel truck very quickly, since it was running at very slow speeds. I was running right around 60 mph, which was the posted speed limit. It surely wasn't fast enough to be coming up on another truck & the four-wheelers that trailed behind it like I did. The truck was running between 45 & 50 mph for the most part, but every once in a while the brake lights would come on and it would slow

Paying Homage

A while back I posted a video of me and my hubs riding down the road. I had no idea it would get the attention it did. Initially, I was a bit embarrassed to even put it up, but I wanted to show you the different movements a truck makes from my point of view going around corners and getting on and off of freeways. You could really see that in this video and I was happy so many people liked it! What got to me though, was two of the compliments that I received on the video that were directed towards me and my driving
